As a divorced/single soldier, I live in the barracks and the only pet I'm allowed to have is fish.
So, I got a 20 gallon fish tank, and started buying guppies and tetras...and threw in an african dwarf frog for good measure. With the love of breeding that I 'acquired' in ER/SHG I decided to try breeding fish in captivity. Let me tell you it's very, very easy to do with guppies! I started three adult female guppies and one adult male.
For those who don't know much about guppies, there's a high chance when you pick up a female she's already pregnant. Not only that, but somehow they hold onto enough sperm when bred that they can have babies 2-3 times from one breeding. They are also livebearers, which is neat. BUT, they can have 2-200 babies, or fry, at a time. Keep in mind that I didn't think to google this until I'd already bought my fish...lol ;D
So, about a month and a half to two months after getting my tank and fish set up, I have two tanks. One is 2.5 gallons, the other 20 gallons.
In the big tank, I have 3 adult female guppies, 1 adult male guppy, 1 frog, 2 'red line' tetras, 2 xray tetras, 3 blue danios, and about 25-30 adolescent guppies(about a half inch long)
In the small tank I have somewhere around 40-50 1-week old guppy fry, and for some silly reason I picked up 6 fry that were born in petsmart (they weren't sure what type the fry were, there were three types of fish in that tank) just to see what they would look like when they got older.
Now...with close to one hundred fish of varying ages, I'm getting ready to deploy. Ouch! (kind of like trying to give away my SHG horses, with a smaller pool of people to give them to)
